“This work reflects my interest in hierarchies as structures created to organize and assign value. Doilies have a particular association to domestic femininity and crocheting is considered a craft. Hence, both object and technology are situated very close to the bottom of the gender and art/craft hierarchies. Bronze casting, on the other hand, is a material and technology traditionally used by men to create public statuary that commemorates male public and military figures. In the gender and art/craft hierarchies bronze occupies a position very near the top. In essence, by combing these two disparate materials I am subverting one while elevating the other.”
