Francine Lalonde - Drawings in Space
June 13 2003

“I would say about my works in sculpture-installation that their subject is the appropriation of a physical and mental living space. I transform the studio or the gallery space by the integration of architectonic structures within the walls. These structures emerge and seem to escape from the material itself of which they are built (gypsum wallboard and dry wall compound). They overhang, make ridges, dig crevices or reveal themselves by simply a trace of the intervention, suggesting a surface invasion by the surface itself, a concentration of substance and energy.”

“The architectonic structure’s function is to “search” the space itself, as extensions of mind or body would, and reveal to the viewer his or her investigative potential… like plunging into the unconscious. Thus projecting an invented space in a real space, I overlap simultaneous, merging modes of awareness”.
